A Number of Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Strikes A Delta Airlines Aircraft Landing at Sydney

Multiple passengers and crew sustained injuries after a Delta Airlines flight traveling from Los Angeles to Sydney encountered turbulence on Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, a company official stated. A number of the onboard staff sustained injuries.

Local paramedics stated they assessed five patients, and took a trio to hospital with minor injuries that such as spinal discomfort and head pain. The injured ranged from their 30s up to the 70s.

It is the newest example of planes being hit by turbulence, with aviation specialists saying that shifting climate patterns is a key driver.

On board were nearly 250 travelers and 15 crew members on the aircraft, the Delta spokesperson noted, stating that the plane touched down "safely and normally" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday morning.

Emergency responders indicated they received a call just only 180 seconds prior to the plane touched down, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.

The reasons turbulence is getting increasingly prevalent - and potentially more dangerous.

In the previous year, twenty-five passengers and crew sustained injuries when a separate Delta aircraft, flying from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, hit "severe" turbulence just 120 minutes into the long-haul flight, and was forced to make an emergency landing.

Recently, travelers and staff on a Singapore Airlines jet endured a harrowing brief five-second bout of severe turbulence. An individual died and many were hurt, as individuals not fastened in rose out of their seats and fell back down.

Turbulence is a common occurrence on aircraft journeys, and while instances of significant turbulence appear to be increasing, they are statistically infrequent.

Research indicates that there are approximately five thousand cases of severe or worse turbulence annually, out of a sum of over 35 million aircraft departures that currently occur worldwide.

Strong atmospheric disturbance is categorized as when the vertical motions of a plane passing through disturbed air apply more than a significant G-force on your body - sufficient force to propel you from your seat if you were not fastened by a seatbelt.

As a changing climate shifts atmospheric conditions, researchers alert that flying could become less smooth: shifts in temperature and altered air currents in the upper atmosphere are expected to boost the regularity and severity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
