Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
