The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
