As any significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
