Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the community for details.
An important official commented the incident made him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
